Attorney

Derrick H. Muhammad is an accomplished attorney who has been practicing law since 2012. He currently provides legal representation in all aspects of family law, including divorce, child and spousal support, child custody, and legitimation matters.

Prior to founding his Atlanta-based Law Office of Derrick H. Muhammad, LLC, Muhammad spent 19 years working as a Longshoreman, performing dock work in the Ports of Oakland and San Francisco. Eventually, he transitioned in his role, becoming a business agent for the International Longshore and Warehouse Union local #10, representing union members in grievances, arbitrations, and onsite labor disputes.

He successfully collaborated with local and state legislators regarding policies in Oakland’s shipping terminals and issues related to safety and production. As a business agent he encouraged employers to create safe workplace’s, where employees feel secure and enjoy a safe space, company values, and a positive co-working environment that encourages respect for everyone.

Mr. Muhammad’s experience also includes managing residential and commercial properties for key management firms for the past 20 years, managing tenant requests and negotiating new lease contracts.

His passion for equity and equality for persons without a voice motivated him to acquire his Juris Doctor degree from UC Davis School of Law in 2009. Thereafter, he opened his practice in 2012, providing legal counsel to injured maritime workers.

Mr. Muhammad has served as a Board Member for Congress of California Seniors, organizing financial literacy workshops for seniors to prevent elder abuse and ILWU-Northern California District Council, coordinating legislative and political activities for union members.

Advocacy for individuals and families victimized by implicit and explicitly discriminatory systems is Muhammad’s passion, as he lobbies to ensure that his client’s voices are heard, taking pride in bringing an experienced and thorough approach to every case.
